DESCRIPTION:In a world fuelled by digital technologies\, it is likely to fo
rget that despite the proliferation of virtual scenarios the real world ar
ound us is analog. Hence analog electronics play a fundamental role. The w
orkshop proposed is based on the idea that this analog spirit may attract
students and young professionals\, and allow to engage them in electronics
and areas of interest to the IEEE Circuits and Systems society. To this a
im an appealing approach is required. We have opted to using analog electr
onics to create music following a practical Do It Yourself (DIY) philosoph
y.\n\nThe workshop will be mostly practical\, paying special attention to
learning based on doing. For this reason\, the theoretical concepts presen
ted will be supported by simulations and well-designed hands-on experiment
s\, leading to the creation by the attendees of a musical instrument calle
d synthesizer. The synthesizer is an instrument that was very popular in t
he decades of the 60s and 70s\, which is responsible for generating signal
s and combining them in order to create a large variety of sounds.\n\nThe
aim of the workshop is to introduce students to the world of analog electr
onics\, apply it in the context of musical synthesis\, provide students wi
th the concepts and basic tools for analog design\, and put into practice
everything learned by creating a musical synthesizer.\n\nThe first part of
the workshop covers two sessions where theoretical aspects are covered. T
he second part will cover lab sessions.\n\nThere are no pre-requisites to
join the workshop\, although it is advisable to have basic electronics kno
wledge.\n\nAgenda: \nThe first part of the workshop will have two sessions
 \, which are described below:\n\n- Session 1 (17 September 2019\, 6PM to 9
PM): An introduction to IEEE and the IEEE CASS Spain Chapter will be made
by the Chapter chair. Then the basic concepts of music and synthesis will
be shown. To understand the performance of an analog synthesizer\, a free
application named MinimogueVA that emulates an analog synthesizer\, will b
e used. This application can be downloaded at this URL: http://www.vst4fre
 e.com/free_vst.php?id=405\n- Session 2 (19 September 2019\, 6PM to 9PM): B
asic concepts of analog electronics will be taught and will be put into pr
actice using the LTSpice circuit simulator. This simulator can be download
 ed at this URL: https://www.analog.com/en/design-center/design-tools-and-c
