DESCRIPTION:After the success of the [Inaugural UBC Marine Systems Initiati
ve Industry Workshop](https://msi.ubc.ca/news/announcement/apr-5-2019-inau
gural-industry-workshop-launches-marine-systems-initiative-ubc) featuring
over 120 attendees and presentations from the Royal Canadian Navy\, indust
ry innovators and academia\, we are pleased to announce the 2nd UBC Marine
Systems Initiative Industry Workshop: Future Ship in Vancouver on Wednesd
ay\, 4 March 2020.\n\nCo-sponsored by: UBC Marine Systems Initiative\n\nAg
enda: \nThe Marine Systems Initiative (MSI) was launched by UBC at last ye
ar’s workshop with the purpose of developing the talent and innovation t
o support Canada’s shipbuilding\, industrial marine and defence sectors
- supported by founding sponsors Vard Marine and Vard Electro Canada. This
2nd workshop will be an important learning and networking opportunity for
 government stakeholders\, technology innovators\, ship operators\, compon
ent suppliers\, manufacturers\, designers\, educators\, service providers
and research organizations to get an update on our progress and help to se
t the direction for this important initiative in the coming years. The gra
nd challenges of modern ship design we will be tackling are:\n\n- Clean: D
ramatically improve the efficiency of ships\, while reducing air pollution
and GHG emissions from the marine industry.\n- Quiet: Greatly reduce nois
e pollution caused by ships and other marine enterprises.\n- Safe: Improve
safety and situational awareness in order to avoid the human\, economic a
nd environmental impacts of shipboard incidents and collisions at sea.\n-
Intelligent: Upgrade shipboard sensor\, information\, and decision systems
in order to provide accurate and timely warnings of surface and near-surf
ace threats.\n- Autonomous: Increase vessel and system autonomy to improve
efficiency\, safety\, resiliency and reduce crewing requirements.\n- Tale
nted: Train people who can design and innovate in the shipbuilding and ind
ustrial marine sector\n\nPresentations and discussions during the event wi
ll include hybrid-electric power systems\, alternative fuels\, automation
& control\, wireless communications\, cybersecurity\, high-performance com
puting and designing for people.\n\nThe workshop has been scheduled for th
e day before the [Western Innovation Forum (WIF)](https://www.wd-deo.gc.ca
/eng/19917.asp) presented by Western Economic Diversification Canada\, tog
ether with the Aerospace Industries Association of Canada-Pacific and the
Association of British Columbia Marine Industries. This is intended to fac
ilitate travel schedules.\n\nBldg: Robson Square\, University of British C
