DESCRIPTION:28 February 2020 (13:40): IEEE AP/MTT/EMC/ED Turkey Seminar Ser
ies (S.66)\n\nSpeaker: Prof. Haluk Külah\, Middle East Technical Universi
ty\n\nTopic: "Microsystems for Biomedical Applications: BioMEMS & Fully Im
plantable Cochlear Implants Enabled by BioMEMS: FLAMENCO"\n\nLocation: Mid
dle East Technical University\, Ankara\, Turkey\n\nAbstract: This presenta
tion will introduce microsystems for biomedical applications and related p
rojects at BioMEMS Research Group. The first part of the presentation will
cover microfluidics and uTAS related projects focused on cell separation
and cell counting (dielectrophoresis chips for cell separation\, gravimetr
ic sensors for cancer cell detection\, microvalves and pumps for lab-on-a-
chip systems\, and electrochemical sensors for bacteria and toxin detectio
n). The second part will introduce the ERC supported FLAMENCO project on n
ext generation cochlear implants\, and the progress up to date.\n\nFLAMENC
O has a ground-breaking nature as it revolutionizes the operation principl
e of the conventional Cochlear Implants (CI). The overall objective of FLA
MENCO is to develop a fully implantable\, low-power\, energy harvesting (s
elf-powered)\, next generation CI mimicking the natural hearing mechanism
of the ear. Fully Implantable Cochlear Implant (FICI) has the potential to
eliminate the aforementioned concerns\, but a reliable internal power sou
rce and an implantable acoustic sensor that can fit into a small volume ar
e the main bottlenecks. In FLAMENCO project\, we are working towards overc
oming these challenges to improve the lives of people with sensorineural i
mpairment.\n\nBio: Prof. Dr. Haluk Külah received B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees
 in electrical engineering from METU\, Ankara\, Turkey\, in 1996 and 1998\
, respectively. He received Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from th
e University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor\, in 2003. From 2003 to 2004\, he was
employed as a Research Fellow at the Department of Electrical Engineering
and Computer Science\, the University of Michigan. Dr. Külah joined the
Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department of METU as a faculty mem
ber in 2004. His research interests include MEMS\, MEMS-based energy scave
nging\, microsystems for biomedical applications (BioMEMS)\, and mixed-sig
nal interface electronics design for MEMS sensors. Dr. Külah is member of
Board of Directors and Executive Committee of METU MEMS Research Center.
He has been awarded with 2009 Research Encouragement Award by Prof. Mustaf
a PARLAR Education and Research Foundation\, 2013 Research Encouragement A
ward by TÜBİTAK\, 2013 IBM Faculty Award\, and 2015 Young Scientist Awar
d by The Science Academy\, Turkey. Dr. Külah has received EU Horizon 2020
2015 ERC Consolidator Grant by FLAMENCO project\, which is on autonomous
and fully implantable cochlear implants. (https://biomems.eee.metu.edu.tr)
