DESCRIPTION:Electric grids around the world are seeing increasing amounts o
f inverter-based generation resources such as wind and solar photovoltaic
power plants and\, more recently\, battery energy storage systems. These r
esources are being connected to both the distribution system and the trans
mission system. IEEE Std 1547\, first released in 2003 and revised extensi
vely in 2018\, defined the interconnection and interoperability requiremen
ts for distributed energy resources connected to typical primary and secon
dary distribution systems. But even though the growth in total installed c
apacity of utility-scale inverter-based power plants connected to the tran
smission grid has surpassed the capacity of inverters connected to the dis
tribution system\, there are no IEEE standards for transmission-connected
plants. IEEE formed the P2800 working group in early 2019 to rectify this
shortcoming and to formulate an interconnection and interoperability stand
ard for transmission connected inverter-based resources. This work is on-g
oing with target publication of the standard in 2021. This presentation wi
ll give an overview of why the P2800 standard is required\, present status
and timeline and highlights of the contents of the proposed standard. The
presentation will also include a brief discussion of the related testing
 standard\, P2800.1. The speaker is a member of the P2800 working group.\n\
