DESCRIPTION:The Institute for Data\, Econometrics\, Algorithms\, and Learni
ng (IDEAL) is announcing a Special Quarter of Theory of Deep Learning to b
e held from September 15 to December 12\, 2020. The Special Quarter will b
e run on the gather.town platform and Zoom\, which will support a virtual
 space for classes\, meetings\, seminars\, and water-cooler interactions. T
hose interested in participation may apply at https://www.ideal.northweste
rn.edu/special-quarters/fall-2020/ . The kick-off event will be held on Se
ptember 15.\n\nSynopsis: Deep learning plays a central role in the recent
revolution of artificial intelligence and data science. In a wide range of
applications\, such as computer vision\, natural language processing\, an
d robotics\, deep learning achieves dramatic performance improvements over
existing baselines and even human. Despite the empirical success of deep
learning\, its theoretical foundation remains less understood\, which hind
ers the development of more principled methods with performance guarantees
.\n\nAbout IDEAL: IDEAL is an NSF-funded multi-discipline (computer scienc
 e\, statistics\, economics\, electrical engineering\, and operations resea
rch) and multi-institution (Northwestern University\, Toyota Technological
Institute at Chicago\, and University of Chicago) collaborative institute
that focuses on key aspects of the theoretical foundations of machine lea
rning\, high-dimensional data analysis\, and optimization in both strategi
c and non-strategic environments. The primary activity of the institute wi
ll be thematically focused quarters which will coordinate graduate course
work with workshops and external visitors.\n\nThis Special Quarter is orga
nized by Nathan Srebro (TTIC)\, Zhaoran Wang (Northwestern)\, and Dongning
  Guo (Northwestern).\n\nVirtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/238491
