DESCRIPTION:The concept of sensors and processing is undergoing many change
s due to major strides in electronics and communications. The current noti
on of measurement follows the idea of “measure everything”\, “measur
e all times\,” “measure from anywhere” has challenged the researcher
s to re-examine how sensing is done\, sensed data is managed and informati
on is extracted. Currently\, research is focussed on developing sensors th
at are (a) cheaper so that they can be easily deployed everywhere\, (b) ph
ysically “small” and unobstrusive\, (c) wireless and able to communica
te “on demand” and “at will”\, (d) low powered (“green”)\, (e)
able to preprocess the data before communicating\, (f) able to self ident
ify\, self validate\, self calibrate and\, be fault tolerant. Smart sensin
g and Sensing smartly becomes crucial in this connected world. “Intellig
ence” at sensing\, communicating and processing levels are desired in al
l applications. With all these advancement\, one has to make a hard choice
between quality of data and quantity of data. Quality is dependent on the
type of sensing (contact or non-contact) while quantity may be attributed
to ubiquitous nature of sensing. Quantity and quality of sensed data affe
ct the extraction and interpretation of information. Furthermore\, when pr
ocessing is outsourced\, issues of privacy and security become an issue. I

X-ALT-DESC:Description: <br /><p>The concept of sensors and processing is u
ndergoing many changes due to major strides in electronics and communicati
ons. The current notion of measurement follows the idea of &ldquo\;measure
 everything&rdquo\;\, &ldquo\;measure all times\,&rdquo\; &ldquo\;measure
from anywhere&rdquo\; has challenged the researchers to re-examine how sen
sing is done\, sensed data is managed and information is extracted. Curren
tly\, research is focussed on developing sensors that are (a) cheaper so t
hat they can be easily deployed everywhere\, (b) physically &ldquo\;small&
rdquo\; and unobstrusive\, (c) wireless and able to communicate &ldquo\;on
 demand&rdquo\; and &ldquo\;at will&rdquo\;\, (d) low powered (&ldquo\;gre
en&rdquo\;)\, (e) able to preprocess the data before communicating\, (f) a
ble to self identify\, self validate\, self calibrate and\, be fault toler
ant. Smart sensing and Sensing smartly becomes crucial in this connected w
orld. &ldquo\;Intelligence&rdquo\; at sensing\, communicating and processi
ng levels are desired in all applications. With all these advancement\, on
e has to make a hard choice between quality of data and quantity of data.
Quality is dependent on the type of sensing (contact or non-contact) while
quantity may be attributed to ubiquitous nature of sensing. Quantity and
quality of sensed data affect the extraction and interpretation of informa
tion. Furthermore\, when processing is outsourced\, issues of privacy and
security become an issue. In all\, is sensing in the connected world: A cu
rse or a boon?</p>
