DESCRIPTION:Joint Pikes Peak IEEE Section & Life Member Affinity Group\n\nO
ctober Virtual Meeting\n\nThursday\, October 22\, 2020\n\n6 pm MDT\, 7 pm
CDT\n\nPlease Register and you will receive Zoom log in instruction prior
to the meeting\n\nSatellite Communications Influence on Formation of the U
S Space Force\n\nDavid Fitzgerald\, Pikes Peak Life Member\n\nThe sixth mi
litary service\, the US Space Force (USSF) was established in December 201
9. Satellite communications\, the ability to transmit information to\, fro
m and within space was one of several factors that contributed to the USSF
establishment decision. This presentation will review all of these factor
s and the history of how they influenced the USSF decision process with an
emphasis on satellite communications. It will be shown how the technologi
cal and functional heritage of communication from the early stages of the
US Army\, and Air Force\, contributed to the formation of the US Space Com
mand and eventually the US Space Force. Real world examples will be used t
o illustrate past and present engineering challenges that were solved by s
atellite communications\, and the implications for future space activities
\, both civil and military.\n\nCo-sponsored by: Dr. John Santiago\n\nSpeak
