IEEE-Hyderabad Section and our PES/IAS/PELS Jt. Chapter jointly conduct ev
ery year a Faraday Memorial Lecture (FML) Program. This is a Flagship even
t of our Section and also of our PES--Jt. Chapter. Distinguished/ eminent
persons who contributed to innovations\, applications of technology for th
e advancement of our society\, are invited by us for our FML Program for d
elivering lectures\, which enlighten/ enrich the knowledge of fellow profe
ssional engineers/ students.\n\nIn line with the above\, our PES-Jt. Chapt

 *********************\nAbstract of the above Lecture:\n\n*****************
**********\n\nSignificant improvement in electric machine power density ha
s been made in recent years driven by emerging applications that are sensi
tive to size and weight of the electric power equipment. One such applicat
ion is hybrid electric aircraft\, which is being developed to meet ambitio
us emission reduction goals that have been set by the aviation industry. S
mall electric aircraft are already being produced and offered commercially
\, but significant challenges prevent electrified propulsion in commercial
aviation. Technology gaps include the availability of lightweight batteri
es\, motors\, and power distribution hardware. In a recent report\, the US
National Academy of Engineers has identified power levels and specific-po
wer targets for electrical machines to enable the electrification of diffe
rent classes of aircraft. Both cryogenic (superconducting) and non-cryogen
ic machines are being pursued to meet these requirements. This talk will d
escribe the state of the art in airborne electrical machines\, approaches
for attaining high power and efficiency\, and potential challenges and opp
ortunities in the integration of these technologies in electric/hybrid ele
ctric aircraft. Another application that is sensitive to electric machine
power density\, and at the other end of the speed spectrum\, is large wind
turbines. Technology synergy between these applications and development a
ctivities targeting further increase in power density will be discussed.\n
