DESCRIPTION:This workshop was organized by IEEE WIE Lahore Section in colla
boration with IEEE WIE\nBahria University\, Lahore Student Branch and deli
vered by Mr. Usman ur Rehman\nAhmed (Senior Microsoft Consultant - PCM). T
he talk started with the recitation of the Holy\nQuran. Then our Guest Spe
aker Mr. Usman-Ur-Rehman Ahmed talked to students. He\ndiscussed Applicati
on modernization is the process of taking existing legacy applications and
\nmodernizing their platform infrastructure\, internal architecture\, and/
or features. Much of the\ndiscussion around application modernization toda
y is focused on monolithic\, on-premises\napplications—typically updated
and maintained using waterfall development processes—and\nhow those app
lications can be brought into cloud architecture and release patterns\, na
mely\nmicroservices DevOps. He also discussed the benefits of application
modernization can\ntypically be summarized as improving the velocity of ne
w feature delivery\, exposing the\nfunctionality of existing applications
to be consumed via API by other services\, and\nre-platforming application
s from on-premises to cloud for the purpose of application scale and\nperf
ormance as well as long-term data center and IT strategy. He highlighted t
he challenges\nwith application modernization typically boil down to cost
and complexity. Moving an\napplication from on-premises to cloud with no t
hought to the ROI is moving applications just to\nmove them. Conversely\,
other applications might benefit meaningfully from re-platforming or\nre-a
rchitecturing but are so heavily coupled to existing systems and infrastru
cture that the\ncomplexity of modernization might outweigh the upside. He
said the key to success in\napplication modernization\, like most things\,
ultimately comes down to strategy and picking\napplication modernization
projects where the benefits of cloud\, speed\, performance\, scale\,\nnew
feature dev\, etc. are ones that offer the given application a clear path
to improved\ncustomer experience and ROI. The Shield & refreshment was giv
en to the speaker in the\nclosing ceremony.\n\nSpeaker(s): Mr. Usman ur Re
