DESCRIPTION:Professor Toro Carnevali will describe the efforts of the Unite
 d States to build a missile defense system in space capable of protecting 
 the nation from attacks by ballistic strategic nuclear weapons. The presen
 tation starts with a recount of military initiatives undertaken since the 
 early 1980’s and continuing until today\, to build such a system\, and t
 hen analyze its potential impact on the ability of Nuclear Weapon States t
 o deter a devastating first strike from adversaries. The importance of of 
 international arms control treaties for guaranteeing peace and stability a
 mong Nuclear Weapon States\, as well as prospects for a world free of nucl
 ear weapons is discussed next. The recent creation of a US Space Force and
  its effects on the peaceful exploration and use of outer space is analyze
