DESCRIPTION:Supported by the European Commission\, mHealth4Afrika has co-de
signed and validated a modular\, multilingual\, comprehensive and state of
the art health information system to support strengthening primary health
care delivery in resource constrained environments. This work was carried
out in partnership with Ministries of Health\, district health officers\,
healthcare facility managers and healthcare workers from urban\, rural and
deep rural primary healthcare facilities in Ethiopia\, Kenya\, Malawi and
South Africa.\n\nThis DL shares lessons learnt\, good practices\, societa
l and ethical challenges associated with the systematic introduction of a
comprehensive healthcare solution in challenging resource constrained envi
ronments. It will facilitate discussion around about potential opportuniti
es for IEEE and non-IEEE members to get more involved in Sustainable Devel
opment and ICT4D activities at home and abroad.\n\nCo-designed with Minist
ries of Health\, District Health Offices\, Health Facility Managers and Nu
rses from rural and deep rural health facilities in Ethiopia\, Kenya\, Mal
awi and South Africa\, mHealth4Afrika is a comprehensive\, standards based
technology and capacity building solution designed to complement and grad
ually replace use of traditional hardcopy patient registries.\n\nCo-funded
by the European Commission\, mHealth4Afrika was co-designed and validated
in 23 healthcare facilities (including county and referral hospitals) in
Ethiopia\, Kenya\, Malawi and South Africa\, serving a total catchment pop
ulation of c.875\,000 people. It provides an adaptable\, extensible\, modu
lar\, multi-lingual and standards based electronic health platform to supp
ort longitudinal “cradle to grave” medical records\, integrating: Elec
tronic Health Record (EHR) and Electronic Medical Record (EMR) functionali
ty\; use of Medical Sensors at the point of care\; analytical\, visualizat
ion and decision support tools\; automatic generation of program specific
aggregate data for District Health Offices & Ministries of Health\; SMS Ap
pointment Reminders\; and integration with a Laboratory Test System\n\nThi
s presentation will share insights into the lessons learnt and societal an
d ethical implications of introducing technology to strengthen access to u
niversal healthcare delivery in resource constrained environments.\n\nCo-s
