DESCRIPTION:Since the late 20th century\, expectations of both healthcare p
roviders and patients have changed towards a model of active patients. Pat
ients show signs of interest in engaging in their medical care in various
ways to enhance their health. Healthcare providers also encourage patients
to monitor their health statuses and set their own health goals. However\
, it is challenging to increase patients’ involvement in their care\; su
ch strategies may place extra pressure on the patients’ shoulders or int
errupt healthcare providers’ practices. While research shows that techno
logy can help mitigate potential challenges that patients and healthcare p
roviders face\, the questions of how\, where\, and what technologies to de
sign remain unanswered.\n\nIn my research\, I address the need to design e
ffective technologies and information visualization systems that can help
patients and healthcare providers increase patient engagement in their car
 e. In this talk\, I will discuss designing and developing visualizations t
o (1) support patients with making data-driven decisions about their care\
; (2) improve communicating patient self-tracked health data with healthca
re providers during clinical visits\; (3) facilitate analyzing and reviewi
ng patient medical data collaboratively with healthcare providers during c
 linical visits.\n\nSpeaker(s): Dr. Fateme Rajabiyazdi\, \n\nOttawa\, Ontar
