DESCRIPTION:The term "Smart cities" is used frequently to enhance the value
of a new process or initiative announced by local or federal government a
nd this is a welcome and acceptable activity to push the initiative along
to another level as part of an overall plan for a smart city. The plans fo
r smart cities as cited by many "Smartcity" related blogs or website initi
atives might not tackle the fundamental question of "what is a smart city"
? This presentation will touch on various aspects of a smart city\, the "d
igital twin"\, "digital transformation targets" and what has been done to
date and what needs to be done in the near future if one has to use the ti
tle of "Smartcity". The presenter will show using examples of what a smart
city should provide and how some of these facilities are focused on reduc
ing the "friction" in the daily activity in a smart city. Recent research
findings presented at an recent international "virtual" conference will be
presented and questions regarding how we take city objectives forward res
pecting individual city themes will be discussed. Studies presented at res
earch at the Macquarie University and other resources at the IEEE (smartci
ties.ieee.org) will be touched on such as how cities can be "adopted" by r
esearch institutions to guide their progress into several important functi
onal areas of city activity that emerge from research on what makes a smar
