DESCRIPTION:The 5G mmWave Channel Model Alliance\, in collaboration with th
e IEEE VT-S Propagation Committee\, IEEE SA P2982\, and the IEEE Vancouver
Joint Aerospace and Electromagnetics Chapter is organizing a Workshop on
Terahertz Channels and Systems to be held in conjunction with the IEEE VTC
 2021-Spring conference.\n\nThis workshop will take place at 10:00 – 12:
00 ET / 7:00 – 9:00 PT on Tuesday\, 27 April 2021. It will focus on Tera
hertz Channels and Systems and feature presentations on the following topi
cs:\n\n- Standardization activities to streamline channel sounding\n- Tech
niques for channel modeling and parameter estimation\, highlighting the ne
w issues that would arise in extending the work to THz channels\n- Channel
sounder design and measurement results up to 320 GHz\n- Compound channel
model for THz channels covering four physical effects (absorption\, attenu
ation\, shadowing\, and fading) and accurate noise modeling\n\nThe meeting
will be organized into four 15-minute presentations\, each followed by a
10-15-minute question and answer period. The speakers who will be presenti
ng during this workshop are:\n\n- David Michelson (University of British C
olumbia\, Canada): Verification of Millimeter-Wave Channel Sounders: IEEE
P2982 Working Group Activities\n- Akbar Sayeed (University of Wisconsin–
Madison\, USA): From mmW to THz Channel Modeling\, Measurements\, and Para
meter Estimation: What is Similar and What is Different?\n- Wilhelm Keusge
n (Fraunhofer HHI\, Germany): A High Performance Channel Sounder at 300 GH
z: Design\, Verification and Measurements\n- Mohamed-Slim Alouini (KAUST\,
Saudi Arabia): On the Channel and Noise Modeling in the THz Band\n\nFor m
ore information\, contact:\n\nProf. Dave Michelson\, davem@ece.ubc.ca\,\n\

David G. Michelson leads the Radio Science Lab at the University of Britis
h Columbia\, Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering where his resear
ch focuses on short-range/low-power wireless networks for smart transporta
tion\, smart utility\, and maritime applications\, millimetre-wave channel
s and systems\, and satellite networks for communications and remote sensi
ng. Prof. Michelson serves as President of the Canadian National Committee
of the International Union of Radio Science\, Canadian representative to
URSI Commission F - Wave Propagation and Remote Sensing\, member of the Bo
ard of Governors of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society\, member of the
Steering Committee of the NIST-sponsored 5G mm-Wave Channel Model Alliance
\, and as co-director of the AURORA Connected Vehicle Technology Testbed a
nd principal investigator of the Campus as a Wireless Living Lab project a
t UBC.\n\nAkbar Sayeed (Fellow IEEE) is a Professor of Electrical and Comp
uter Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison\, where he leads t
he Wireless Communications and Sensing Laboratory. His research interests
include wireless communications\, channel modeling\, signal processing\, c
ommunication and information theory\, time-frequency analysis\, machine le
arning\, and applications. A current focus is the development of basic the
ory\, system architectures\, and testbeds for emerging wireless technologi
es\, including mmW\, THz\, and high-dimensional MIMO systems. He is a Fell
ow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and led
the creation of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Coordinati
on Network on mmW Wireless (2016-2020). Dr. Sayeed served as a Program Dir
ector at the NSF (2017-2019)\, where his portfolio covered the basic scien
ce and engineering of sensing\, processing\, and communication of informat
ion in all modalities\, including the integrated design of hardware and al
gorithms for information processing systems and networks.\n\nWilhelm Keusg
en received the Dipl.-Ing. (M.S.E.E.) and Dr.-Ing. (Ph.D.E.E.) degrees fro
m the RWTH Aachen University\, Aachen\, Germany\, in 1999 and 2005\, respe
ctively. From 1999 to 2004\, he was with the Institute of High Frequency T
echnology\, RWTH Aachen University\, where he worked on the reciprocity of
multiple antenna systems. From 2004 to 2021 he was heading a research gro
up for millimeter-waves and advanced transceiver technologies at the Fraun
hofer Institute for Telecommunications\, Heinrich Hertz Institute\, locate
d in Berlin\, Germany. Since 2021 he is a full professor at Technical Univ
ersity Berlin and heading the chair for Microwave Systems. His main resear
ch areas are millimeter wave and THz communications for 5G and beyond. Wil
helm Keusgen is author or co-author of more than 140 scientific papers.\n\
nMohamed-Slim Alouini (Fellow IEEE\, Fellow OSA) was born in Tunis\, Tunis
ia. He received a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Califoni
a Institute of Technology (Caltech) in 1998. He served as a faculty member
at the University of Minnesota then in the Texas A&M University at Qatar
before joining in 2009 the King Abdullah University of Science and Technol
ogy (KAUST)\, where he is now a Distinguished Professor of Electrical and
Computer Engineering. He is a Fellow of the IEEE as well as of the OSA\, a
nd he is currently particularly interested in addressing the uneven global
distribution\, access to\, and use of information and communication techn
ologies in far-flung\, low-density populations\, low-income\, and/or hard-
to-reach areas.\n\nCo-sponsored by: 5G Millimetre-Wave Channel Model Allia
