DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Autonomous drones are emerging as a powerful new bree
d of mobile sensing platform. Small embedded computers that move almost un
constrained while carrying rich sensor payloads\, such as cameras and micr
ophones\, bring sensing where no other technology can reach. Notwithstandi
ng recent advancements\, the current use of drone technology is often limi
ted to manual control of individual devices by skilled individuals. The ga
p between this and large-scale autonomous operation remains significant. T
he challenges span diverse disciplines\, from computer science and enginee
ring up to regulatory and legal aspects. In this talk\, we discuss the res
earch efforts we are carrying out to overcome some of these challenges. Ou
r work includes programming and operating systems\, flight control\, as we
ll as realistic experimentation and is constantly fed by real-world deploy
ments we carry out in a range of application domains\, including aerial ph
otogrammetry and 3D reconstruction.\n\nCo-sponsored by: Rice University EC

Small embedded computers that move almost unconstrained while carrying ric

no other technology can reach. Notwithstanding recent advancements\, the c

out to overcome some of these challenges. Our work includes programming an
