DESCRIPTION:IEEE New Hampshire Section Broadband Forum\n\nApril 21\, 2021\,
7:00–9:00 p.m.\n\nThe IEEE Broadband Forum is a free\, virtual event ad
dressing the challenges of providing broadband internet access to sparsely
populated states such as New Hampshire. The forum will discuss the networ
k technologies used and proposed for broadband access and address the tech
nical and economic viability of each for urban\, suburban\, and rural area
 s. Open to the public and civic leaders\, the speakers will answer questio
ns from the online audience.\n\nThe goals for the event are to provide att
endees with\n\n(1) An understanding of the demographic and economic issues
hampering wide deployment of broadband access\n\n(2) The technology optio
ns currently proposed for delivering broadband\n\n(3) The status and outlo
ok of state and federal programs to extend broadband access to un-served a
reas of New Hampshire.\n\nEvent description and registration for Zoom acce
ss is at: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/269186\nThe event will be recor
ded and posted on the IEEE New Hampshire Video Newsletter page\nhttps://ww
 w.youtube.com/channel/UCcLiKOBdfNh6vV2RZFQ9lHQ\n\nThe speakers are\n\n- Er
ic Burger\, research professor of computer science at Georgetown Universit
y\, formerly an assistant director of the White House Office of Science an
d Technology Policy and CTO of the FCC.\n- Steve Camerino\, president and
chief executive officer of New Hampshire Electric Cooperative\, which is w
orking to expand high speed internet service in the under-served communiti
es in New Hampshire.\n- Larry Press\, professor emeritus of information sy
stems at California State University Dominguez Hills\, Larry has followed
internet via satellite projects since the first generation of low earth ob
servation constellations.\n\nBackground\n\nAccess to broadband has become
a national priority\, as the COVID-19 pandemic amplified the significant g
aps in coverage and data rates in many areas\, gaps which limit the abilit
y to connect to work and school from home. Where coverage is available\, t
he high cost of service may prevent many from accessing it. As unparallele
d federal investments are being proposed to close the digital divide\, com
munities and their leaders should develop an understanding of the options
and trade-offs to determine which technologies and business models best se
rve them.\n\nThe broadband internet forum is organized by the IEEE New Ham
pshire Section. IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organ
ization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity.\n\n
