DESCRIPTION:The Chicago Chapter and co-sponsoring EMCS units welcomes every
one to this informative and entertaining presentation about the roots of o
ur profession.\n\nThe practice of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is g
enerally understood as beginning with the military in the 1950s. Work in t
he field was mostly limited to military applications until about 1980\, wh
en the FCC in the US and agencies\nin other countries responded to broadca
st interference complaints by setting RF emission limits on commercial pro
ducts. Though it wasn’t called EMC at the time\, those techniques were a
pplied in the late 19th century.\nGuglielmo Marconi’s company demonstrat
ed wireless telegraphy to the British navy\, hoping for a contract to sell
the equipment. However\, the spark-gap noise bursts transmitted by Marcon
i’s wireless limited communication to one pair of devices at a time and
Marconi had to fix it in order to close the deal.\n\nThe stories of ambiti
on\, salesmanship\, and resourcefulness give a colorful backdrop to our wo
rk in EMC. In many ways\, EMC practices can be traced back to the very beg
inning of the radio art. This talk will relate those stories and give a de
eper perspective on the often unappreciated work of the EMC engineer.\n\nJ
