DESCRIPTION:Lecture on Software Safety: Process Overview and Application\n\
nSince 2009\, the Dallas Chapter of IEEE Reliability Society (RS) has acti
vely engaged in the\nResearch Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program
organized by the Department of\nComputer Science at the University of Tex
as at Dallas (UTD) under the supervision of Professor\nW. Eric Wong. This
is funded by the US National Science of Foundation (NSF) with ten\nundergr
aduates selected nationwide for a ten-week research program. A special wel
come is\nextended to students from underrepresented groups (women\, minori
ties\, and persons with\ndisabilities) and academic institutions with limi
ted research opportunities.\nThe focus is on “software safety and reliab
ility”\, however\, the technology and skills learned by\nthe students ha
ve general applicability to research and practice in their future studies.
We provide\na close collaboration with our industry partners. In addition
to working on assigned research\nprojects at UTD\, lectures by practition
ers from Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company and Argo\nData will be arrang
ed to help the students better understand how software safety and reliabil
ity is\nadopted in practice for real-life applications. This also gives st
udents a chance to directly\ncommunicate with engineers to receive a first
-hand account of work environments and lifestyles\nin the industry.\n\nRic
