DESCRIPTION:16017 Sarya Road\nPelkie\, MI 49958\n\nThe Upper Peninsula of M
ichigan was in need of a long-term\, reliable\, affordable and clean energ
y solution. Upper Michigan Energy Resources responded to that need by prov
iding the natural gas-fueled F.D. Kuester Generating Station and A.J. Mihm
Generating Station. The F. D. Kuester Station is located in Negaunee Town
ship (near Marquette)\, and A. J. Mihm Station is located in Baraga Townsh
ip (near L’Anse). Both stations were placed in service in March 2019 at
a total cost of approximately $275 million.\n\nThe generating units use a
technology known as RICE – Reciprocating Internal Combustion Engines. RI
CE units are becoming increasingly common on utility power systems due to
their high efficiency\, modular construction and flexibility of operations
. Each engine is 46 feet long and 20 feet tall and weighs approximately 32
5 tons. Total net generating capacity is 54.9 MW from A.J. Mihm Station.\n
\nThe RICE units are housed inside a building with an exterior resembling
a warehouse. UMERC worked with the engine manufacturer and an engineering
firm to design each generating station with a 50-decibel sound limit – w
hich is similar to the sound made by a household floor fan. Some of the fe
atures include concrete walls with interior sound attenuation panels\, sil
encers on air intake and exhaust systems and ultra-low-noise radiators. So
und testing results indicate the facilities operate below the targeted lim
it - between 25 and 36 decibels.\n\nThe air quality control systems at the
stations use selective catalytic reduction with urea injection for contro
l of nitrogen oxides and an oxidation catalyst for control of carbon monox
ide\, volatile organic compounds and hazardous air pollutants.\n\nThis is
an industrial environment. Closed toe shoes are required. Hard hats and sa
fety glasses will be provided\, but you may wear your own personal protect
ive gear if you prefer.\n\nFollowing the tour\, we will gather for dinner
 at\nPilgrim River Steakhouse\n47409 US-41\nHoughton\, MI 49931\n\nDinner c
ost is $15. There will be no charge for IEEE Student Members attending din
ner.\n\nAgenda: \nNote times are Eastern Daylight Time.\nThe tour and dinn
