DESCRIPTION:Significant technical improvements over the 70 years have resul
ted in a much longer life for ILS than expected. ILS is still by far the m
ost used landing system\, despite ICAO’s standards for new concepts. The
reasons new concepts were not successful\, are twofold: Difficulties to s
how financial benefits over costs for individual operators\, and con- cert
ed action with all involved stakeholders. This has resulted in\, up to now
\, far less implementation of satellite-based landing systems than expecte
 d. Hence\, ILS might celebrate its centennial before such systems take ove
r as the preferred aircraft landing system.\n\nCo-sponsored by: Institute
