DESCRIPTION:Communications systems have made tremendous progress over the p
ast 50 years. They have\nevolved from one function device that can transmi
 t and receive a very low-quality audio to\nsupport very high-fidelity voic
e\, high speed data for video and soon virtual reality. Software\nDefined
radio has played a major role in this extraordinary evolution. Currently S
oftware\nDefined Radio is at the heart of the revolution from IoT to very
wideband systems used on land\,\nin space and outer space communication.\n
Software Defined Radio places much or most of the complex signal processin
g involved in\nreceivers and transmitters into the digital domain. In its
purest form\, and SDR receiver might\nconsist simply of an analog-to-digit
al convert chip connected to an antenna. All the filtering and\nsignal det
ection can take place in the digital domain such as FPGA and GPP. Currentl
y AI/ML\nlearning are starting to replace all the processing elements and
functions and will open what is\nundoubtedly a very exciting future in com
munications.\nThis talk will present a practical view that covers the evol
ution of SDR\, cognitive radio to\nconfigurable systems of today. In addit
ion\, future research will be presented.\n\nCo-sponsored by: IEEE North Je
