DESCRIPTION:The IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society\, Chicago
Chapter is honored to present Dr. Muna Aryal\, a promising early-career re
searcher in the field of ultrasound-mediated brain drug delivery.\n\nDeliv
ery of therapeutics into the brain is challenging because almost 100% of l
arge and 98% of small molecules that exist in today's medicine are stopped
by the special nature of brain vasculature\, the blood-brain barrier (BBB
) before entering into the brain tissue from the systemic blood circulatio
n. Different methods have been used to overcome those challenges either by
directly injecting drugs into the targeted brain tissue via stereotactic
surgeries or by designing new pharmaceuticals\, but they are invasive and
non-targeted. Low intensity transcranial focused ultrasound-mediated brain
drug delivery is a promising technology that can noninvasively deliver an
y-sized drugs with millimeter resolution to any point in the human brain w
ith FDA-approved hardware. During this talk\, Dr. Aryal will introduce thr
ee different ultrasound-based brain drug delivery techniques\; the blood-b
rain barrier opening\, the ultrasonic drug uncaging\, and the ultrasonic g
lymphatic perturbation. She will then shed light on their applications for
 brain cancer treatment\, neuromodulation\, neuroimaging\, and Alzheimer
’s treatment.\n\nSpeaker(s): Dr. Muna Aryal\, \n\nVirtual: https://event
