DESCRIPTION:IEEE Santa Clara Valley SSIT Chapter\, [IEEE UK and Ireland SSI
 T Chapter](https://www.ieee-ukandireland.org/chapters/society-on-social-im
plications-of-technology/)\, and SSIT IST-Africa SIGHT are cooperating to
organise this SSIT Lecture as a joint Chapter Webinar.\n\nIEEE and SSIT Me
mbers as well as non-IEEE Members are invited to Register and participate.
IEEE Members should include their IEEE Membership Number when registering
.\n\nThis joint meeting will take place online. Registered participants wi
ll be provided with the link prior to the event.\n\nThis meeting will take
place at 11am (Pacific Time) / 7pm (UTC) on 16 December 2021 for one hour
.\n\nFOCUS\n\nThis talk will explore the issue of data in the social secto
 r. In this era\, it is unimaginable evaluating the impact and implementati
on of social programs without using large data sets. Unfortunately\, all t
oo often\, organizations and researchers extract data from individuals\, c
ommunities\, and countries for their own purposes\, and do not even make t
he data available to the subjects of that data. With data flows the power
to make informed decisions.\n\nIt is ironic that international organizatio
ns committed to reversing the legacy of colonialism are employing highly c
olonial practices in their approach to data.\n\nDecolonizing data will hel
p ensure that the benefits of data extraction and analysis will accrue to
the rightful owners of that data\, and greatly strengthen social programs
at the local and national level.\n\nFor more information\, please visit [S
 SIT Website](https://technologyandsociety.org/event/ieee-ssit-lecture-deco
 lonizing-data/)\n\nSpeaker(s): Jim Fruchterman\, CEO\, Tech Matters\, \n\n
