DESCRIPTION:This talk is an accessible explanation of the forward error cor
rection in the M17 Protocol followed by a demonstration of the protocol's
VHF/UHF amateur radio digital voice functionality.\n\nM17 is a community o
f open source developers and radio enthusiasts.\n\nM17 is developing a new
digital radio protocol for data and voice\, made by and for amateur radio
operators. The voice mode uses the free and open Codec 2 voice encoder. T
his means there are no patents\, no royalties\, and no licensing or legal
barriers to scratch-building your own radio or modifying one you already o
wn.\n\nThis freedom to build\, understand\, and innovate is core to amateu
r radio\, but has been missing from the commercially available digital voi
ce modes.\n\nM17 can be adapted to space. Open Research Instititute active
ly supports both terrestrial and space development. Updates about testing
M17 in space will be shared.\n\nThe M17 Protocol can be used over RF with
the following hardware or software implementations:\n\nModule 17 is a smar
t-mic hardware M17 implementation running OpenRTX firmware (In Development
)\n\nTYT MD3x0 and clones with the OpenRTX firmware and a small hardware m
od can be used with the M17 Protocol. (Experimental)\n\nMMDVM hardware run
ning the latest MMDVM firmware.\n\nMMDVM_HS hotspots running the latest MM
DVM_HS firmware. This includes serial based Raspberry Pi hats\, and USB ba
sed dongles that run MMDVM_HS firmware.\n\nCo-sponsored by: Open Research
Institute\, Inc.\n\nSpeaker(s): Michelle Thompson W5NYV\, \n\nAgenda: \n7:
