DESCRIPTION:The Pittsburgh Chapter of the IEEE is honored to have the prese
nce of Mr. Craig R. Shuey\, Chief Operating Officer of the Turnpike at a l
ocal IEEE meeting. Mr. Shuey will present the details of the new Open Road
Tolling (ORT). This unique discussion will be fashioned particularly to t
he technical audience of the IEEE. Currently\, with a few exceptions\, the
Turnpike tolls a vehicle by scanning at access and exit ramps. The curren
t E-Z Pass and Toll By Plate system captures entry and exit points for tol
ling. The advanced ORT system will consist of overhead gantries located at
convent points between each interchange. The gantries will support scanne
rs and cameras along with telecommunications equipment. Thus\, all tolling
structures at interchanges will be removed and the interchange will be co
nverted to a smooth traditional highway ramp. The transition from the curr
ent system to ORT is part of the discussion. This informative presentation
\, geared to engineers\, will provide detailed technical discussion of the
structural\, hardware and software components of the ORT system.\n\nThis
event will be in-person only and limited to the first twenty-five registra
nts (IEEE Members and their guests)\n\nImmediately after the presentation\
, we are invited to an optional tour of the solar farm system that support
s the local Turnpike Maintenance facility. It is situated along the Toll R
oute 66 north of the Western Regional Office. Attending entails a toll tha
t cannot be waived. If convenient\, we can carpool to the site.\n\nDirecti
ons:\n\nFrom Pittsburgh and Monroeville\, use the New Stanton exit of the
Turnpike\, follow signs to RT 119 north and Toll PA Turnpike 66 north\, on
ce on Rt 119 north use exit to Toll 66 north\, once on Toll 66 north \, im
mediately use Exit 1 (No toll). See Turnpike Office on the Right.\n\nFrom
the west on Rt 70 to New Stanton\, take Rt 119 north\, follow sign to Toll
