DESCRIPTION:AES Corporation\, the parent company of Dayton Power and Light
(DP&L)\, has installed 40 MW (+20/-20) of advanced energy storage resource
s for the PJM Interconnection\, which controls the power grid for 60 milli
on people in the Northeast and Midwest regions of the United States. It is
located at DP&L's Tait station in Moraine\, Ohio. The energy storage faci
lity is based upon more than 830\,000 lithium-ion batteries housed in clim
ate controlled shipping containers at the site. The AES battery array prov
ides frequency regulation service to the PJM Interconnection market\, and
this facility is the first of its kind in Ohio. The battery array connects
to the grid via DP&L's Tait station transformers\, through an independent
agreement with PJM.\n\nThis is AES’ fifth facility to run on its Storag
e Operating System. This patented operating system\, called sOS\, is a fas
t-response control architecture that applies performance algorithms to aut
omate the operation of battery-based arrays\, optimizing performance\, eff
iciency\, and extending the life of the batteries. The project was deploye
d from AES’ inventory of battery modules allowing for engineering\, cons
truction\, and commissioning to occur in less than six months.\n\nIn addit
ion to the battery array\, Tait station consists of seven gas-and/or oil-f
ired combustion turbines\, and four diesel generators\, with a generating
capacity of about 586 megawatts. The generating turbines are used during t
imes of peak electricity demand\, especially in the summer and winter. The
facility tour will include a brief inspection of one of the turbine units
