DESCRIPTION:Event Details\n\nThe computing paradigms that support data-inte
nsive applications have been radically transformed many times in the past
few decades. In this talk\, we will take a closer look at these transforma
tions to have a better understanding of the patterns that drive them. With
this understanding\, we project how computing evolves to shape the new tr
ansformation in computing. We will observe how cloud computing is evolving
to be more distributed and decentralized beyond traditional data centers
and how many emerging technologies -- such as blockchain and serverless --
are precursors to this new computing paradigm. Getting ready for this tra
nsformation in computing requires reevaluating and redesigning current dat
a management principles. I will talk about some of our work at UCI EdgeLab
to achieve this goal. This includes our work on AnyLog to build a distrib
uted and decentralized data infrastructure for the Global-Scale Edge.\n\nT
his meeting will be held in person at the Knobbe Martens' Irvine offices.
The doors will open at 6:30 PM for networking. Announcements and the prese
ntation will begin at 7:00 PM. Parking validation will be provided to atte
ndees.\n\nAbout the Speaker Prof. Faisal Nawab:\n\nFaisal Nawab is an Assi
stant Professor of Computer Science at UC Irvine. He received his Ph.D. fr
om UC Santa Barbara where he won the Computer Science Department's best di
ssertation award. His research lies at the intersection of Big Data manage
ment and distributed Cloud Computing systems. Specifically\, he works on d
ata management systems that accelerate and support data science and global
connectivity especially in the domains of autonomous\, mobile application
s and the Internet of Things.\n\nMore information about Prof. Nawab can be
