DESCRIPTION:For many years\, Superconductor Cables have been considered a p
otentially powerful new tool for electric utility engineers. Since the 198
6 discovery of High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) materials that can b
e economically cooled with inexpensive liquid nitrogen\, the utility indus
try has been highly interested in the technology. In 2000\, the first tria
l demonstration of an HTS cable occurred in Carrollton\, Georgia\; followe
d by dozens of further demonstrations in the USA\, Europe\, Japan\, Korea\
, and other countries.\n\nIn 2014\, the first permanent\, continuously uti
lized HTS cable was installed in Essen\, Germany where it has operated fla
wlessly for 6 years. Other permanent projects have since been planned in K
orea and are under consideration in many countries.\n\nIn May of 2019\, th
e US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved the classificati
on of this project as being a transmission asset and a cost recovery plan
for the first permanent HTS cable installation in North America with Commo
nwealth Edison (ComEd) in Chicago. With project ground-breaking occurring
in July 2020 and energized in Summer of 2021\, this project represents com
mercial adoption of the technology and is already driving many US electric
utilities to educate and investigate this proven and newly available tech
nology.\n\nThis presentation will be given by Michael Ross\, Managing Dire
ctor of Superconductor Power Systems for AMSC. The presentation will inclu
de the following discussions:\n\n- Background of High Temperature Supercon
ductor Cable Technology\n\n- Review of Cable Components and Accessories\n\
n- Features and Applications of HTS Cables on Utility Systems\n\n- Benefit
s of HTS Cables for Urban Utilities\n\n-\nImproved Resiliency & Reliabilit
