DESCRIPTION:The behavior of the lightning current along the channel is extr
emely important in the evaluation of the electromagnetic fields at various
distances which may cause disturbances or faults on electric and electron
ic equipment. While the current at the channel-base can be measured by mea
ns of instrumented towers\, the current attenuation and propagation along
the channel is partially unknown. In this framework\, several models have
been developed based on the aim of reproducing the typical characteristics
of the measured electromagnetic fields at various distances. In this lect
ure\, another approach is proposed: the current attenuation is evaluated s
tarting from the electromagnetic fields measurements. The process\, based
on the Tikhonov regularization technique that was derived to manage ill-po
sed problems\, requires some preliminary analysis involving issues such as
a suitable representation of the problem in the frequency-domain and the
investigation on the minimum time window in which one has to sense both th
e channel base current and the fields to get a sufficient amount of inform
ation on the attenuation function.\n\nCo-sponsored by: EMC Lab EPFL\n\nSpe
