DESCRIPTION:On June 20th\, 2023\, the 2023 Tsinghua – Zhejiang University
joint seminar on advanced power electronics was successfully held. This j
oint seminar was organized by the IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) St
udent Branch Chapters of Tsinghua University and Zhejiang University. Five
renowned scholars in the field of power electronics\, both domestic and i
nternational\, have been invited to give special lectures to the students.
The conference adopts a hybrid format\, combining online and offline part
icipation. Students from Tsinghua University can join the seminar in perso
n\, while the guest speakers can participate in person or online.\n\nAt th
e commencement of the seminar\, Professor Kai Sun\, Assistant to the Dean
of the Department of Electrical Engineering at Tsinghua University\, and P
rofessor Yongheng Yang\, Vice Dean of the Department of Electrical Enginee
ring at Zhejiang University\, delivered opening speeches. They highlighted
the remarkable collaboration in academic research and talent development
between the two departments\, including activities such as academic confer
ences\, personnel exchange visits\, course offerings\, and joint student t
raining. Their opening remarks expressed high anticipation for the success
of this joint seminar.\n\nIn the keynote speech section of the seminar\,
Prof. Khurram Afridi from Cornell University gave a speech entitled "Dynam
ic Wireless Charging of Electric Vehicle"\, introducing latest research re
sults of wireless charging of electric vehicle\, and introducing the dynam
ic wireless charging technology\, showing analysis\, comparison with conve
ntional methods\, and applications of the new dynamic technology.\n\nProf.
Fei Teng from Imperial College London gave a speech entitled "Operation o
f Future Power Systems with High Penetration of IBRs: A Stability-constrai
ned Optimization Approach"\, introducing the challenges in high inverter b
ased resources (IBR)-penetrated systems and a stability-constrained optimi
zation approach to minimize operation cost while maintain stability.\n\nPr
of. Chi-Seng Lam from University of Macau gave a speech entitled "Fundamen
tals of Grid-Connected Power Converters in Power Quality Compensation"\, i
ntroducing the current power quality issues\, impacts and standards\, and
introcuding the development and recent research trends of active power fil
ters for power quality compensation.\n\nProf. Shuai Shao from t Zhejiang U
niversity gave a speech entitled "High Density Medium Voltage DC Transform
er based on Series-connected SiC MOSFETs"\, introducing the difficulties a
nd research progress on high density medium voltage DC transformers\, and
introducing the active clamping method to balance the series-connected SiC
MOSFETs.\n\nProf. Lu Qu from Tsinghua University gave a speech entitled "
Research and Application of Key Technologies for Large Capacity DC Breakin
g"\, introducing the challenges and recent research trends of large capaci
ty DC breaking\, and introducing key technologies including high reliabili
ty and fast commutation\, series voltage balancing\, parallele current bal
ancing\, etc.\n\nThis joint seminar offered a good communication platform
for faculty\, students\, and members of IEEE PELS China from both universi
ties. Over 100 individuals actively participated in the seminar\, either t
hrough Zoom meetings or in person. The joint seminar played a pivotal role
in enhancing inter-school communication and fostering the advancement of
power electronics science and technology.\n\nCo-sponsored by: IEEE PELS Zh
