DESCRIPTION:On the 29th of May 2023\, an impactful Electrical Safety Progra
m was conducted by the IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) Student Branch Affi
nity Group\, in collaboration with the IEEE Student Branch of the Universi
ty of Peradeniya\, and proudly sponsored by Kelani Cables PLC. The program
aimed to educate and enhance the technical skills of around 130 trainees
from the National College of Education\, Panideniya\nPeradeniya. Under the
guidance of esteemed industry professionals and experts\, the event provi
ded participants with invaluable knowledge on safety\, wiring\, earthing o
f electronic appliances\, electrical installation\, and minor repairs. The
program was specifically designed to cater to non-engineering students\,
offering them the opportunity to develop essential technical skills in a f
ield crucial to their everyday lives. The program commenced at 1 pm and sa
w the attendance of distinguished guests\, including Mr. Isuru Prasad\, a
Sales Engineer from Kelani Cables PLC\, who conducted an enlightening sess
ion on electrical safety. Additionally\, Mr. Jayantha Wijesinghe\, the Co-
Initiator and Coordinator of Kelani Saviya and Kelani Shakthi Projects\, M
 r. Nalin Samanthilaka\, Assistant Sales Manager\, Prof. Lilantha Samaranay
aka\, Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering\, Dr
. Maheshi Dissanayaka\, Advisor of the IEEE WIE Student Branch Affinity Gr
oup\, Mr. Kapila Mahindasena\, Chairperson of the National College of Educ
ation\, Panideniya\, along with other esteemed staff members\, graced the
event. The program was divided into two segments\, with the first part foc
used on theoretical knowledge and the second part dedicated to hands-on pr
actical sessions. Mr. Isuru Prasad shared valuable insights and conducted
an engaging session\, highlighting the importance of electrical safety pra
ctices. Participants were educated on various aspects\, including the beha
vior of distribution boards\, proper usage of residual current circuit bre
akers (RCCBs) and miniature circuit breakers (MCBs). The practical session
\, led by dedicated volunteers from the Faculty of Engineering at the Univ
ersity of Peradeniya and IEEE WIE committee members\, was facilitated by M
 r. Thimira from the IEEE Student Branch. The aim and objectives of the pra
ctical session were explained\, followed by interactive demonstrations on
the workings of electrical systems within homes. Participants were given t
he opportunity to develop an extension cord and wire a lighting system\, a
llowing them to gain practical experience under expert guidance. Throughou
t the event\, participants were provided with refreshments\, ensuring a co
mfortable and engaging learning environment. The feedback received from th
e attendees was overwhelmingly positive\, as they expressed their gratitud
e for the knowledge gained and the practical skills acquired during the pr
ogram. The collaborative efforts of the IEEE Women in Engineering Student
Branch Affinity Group\, the IEEE Student Branch of the University of Perad
eniya\, and the generous support from Kelani Cables PLC made this Electric
al Safety Program a resounding success. The event not only enriched the te
