DESCRIPTION:In the past decade\, multiple stakeholder organizations have pu
 blished documents forecasting and making recommendations about the electri
 c industrys future. The GridWise® Architecture Council (GWAC)\, a group c
 onvened by the U.S. Dept. of Energy\, chartered a project to assess the el
 ectric industry vision and future state assessment documents and determine
  how aligned these views of the future are. The project objectives\nwere t
 o identify:\n1.) Stakeholders\; vision and future states for the electric 
 industry and grid\n\n2.) Their similarities\, differences\, divergences\, 
 and stakeholder impacts\, and\n\n3.) Architectural challenge-gap categorie
 s for potential multi-stakeholder organization coordination and collaborat
 ion opportunities.\n\nThe GWAC identified six major architectural challeng
 es or gap areas during assessing and characterizing ten vision and future 
 state reports from nine organizations:\n\n1.) Developing new industry stru
 ctures\n\n2.) Transitioning from centralized to distributed\n\n3.) Transit
 ioning from silos to platforms\n\n4.) Developing effective data communicat
 ions enabling control and coordination in distributed structures\n\n5.) St
 andardizing Interfaces and structures\n\n6.) Accommodating large quantitie
 s of DER with new structures\n\nThese must be addressed to achieve the vis
 ion of the future grid described in the ten reports\, so how do we get the
 re? In addition to traditional forward analysis\, the importance of using 
 a structured &amp;quot\;future back&amp;quot\; approach will be discussed.\n\nFina
 lly\, Grid Architecture will be defined and its importance as a tool in th
 is process will be discussed\, along with a description of the GWAC&#39;s Inte
