DESCRIPTION:Join us virtually to welcome DVP Speaker Elisa Barney Smith as
she presents her session on Applying Electrical Engineering and Computer S
cience to the Humanities:\n\nApplications of electrical engineering and co
mputer science like software engineering\, computer hardware\, circuits an
d power grids are well known. The tools developed by engineers and scienti
sts can also be applied to the humanities in fields such as art\, literatu
re and history. This has become known as Digital Humanities. In her career
Elisa has worked to apply image processing and machine learning (a more a
ccurate word for the overused term “Artificial Intelligence”) to many
problems in many fields\, and recently several in Digital Humanities. Thos
e projects include analyzing handwriting in WWI postcards\, analyzing marg
inalia written by 19th century American author Herman Melville\, studying
typography in early printed books\, helping historians extract information
from medieval manuscripts\, and even extracting text from a Dead Sea Scro
ll. This talk containing many vivid illustrations will introduce the audie
nce to the field of Digital Humanities and describe work she has done in s
ome of these projects.\n\nPlease Note: This hybrid session will not be rec
orded. While the Careers in Tech team is investigating awarding Profession
al Development Hours (PDH) for these sessions\, no PDH certificates will b
 e available for this meeting.\n\nSpeaker(s): Elisa Barney Smith\, \n\nVirt
