DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this tutorial is to present the method of assess
ing the lightning hazard of\nmountain cableways and the selection of prote
ctive measures based on the results of this\nassessment in relation to sta
tion buildings\, an overhead passenger transport line\nand people (passeng
ers and tourists in the vicinity of station buildings). The cableway is tr
eated\nas an extensive building structure\, therefore the guidelines conta
ined in the series of lightning\nprotection standards IEC/EN 62305 are the
appropriate tool for analyzing the resistance of\nsuch objects.\nThe subj
ect of detailed considerations are the risks resulting from the impact of
direct and\nnearby lightning on mountain cableways for all existing instal
lations: both the supporting\nstructure of the overhead cableway and each
of the stations (lower\, upper and intermediate -\nif any). They have a di
rect impact on the overvoltage and lightning hazard of the cableway. It\ni
s necessary to disclose all possible ways of overvoltage penetration into
these facilities and\nto carry out an analysis of the compliance of the cu
rrently existing protection measures with\nthe requirements of current sta
ndards and regulations regarding the electromagnetic\ncompatibility of cab
leway equipment and systems in the presence of nearby lightning\ndischarge
s and the resistance of the structure of the railway transport line and it
s station\nbuildings to direct lightning discharges.\nOn the example of an
existing overhead circular monocable railway facility\, the results of a\
npractical assessment of the effectiveness of locally applied lightning an
d surge protection\nmeasures and the degree of their actual adaptation to
the requirements of current EMC and\nlightning protection standards will a
lso be presented. Existing threats revealed during this\nassessment will b
e demonstrated\, both in relation to the safety of people and in relation
 to the\nsystems of technical devices.\n\nCo-sponsored by: Łukasiewicz - P
