DESCRIPTION:IEEE-EDS Distinguished Lecture: Mentorship for Young Scientists
  - Developing Scientific Survival Skills\n\nAbstract: In this lecture\, I
will try to convey a feeling for our course on “Survival Skills for Scie
ntists” [1]. This is a graduate course designed and developed in my depa
rtment\, in which we give basic advice and offer mentorship to our graduat
e students and post-docs. The central theme of this presentation is that s
ucceeding in Science requires skills (often referred to as ‘soft profess
ional skills’) beyond those needed for Science.\n\nThe lecture aims at g
iving basic guidance and mentoring to young scientists (typically science
and engineering undergraduate and first year graduate students).\n\nThe ma
in topics are:\n\n- The job market for graduates in science and engineerin
 g (industry\, national labs and academia\; advantages and disadvantages)\n
 - Funding in modern science\n- Publish or perish\; publishing quality pape
rs\, having an impact\n- Presenting your work to your peers\n- The fundame
ntal laws of ‘scientific survival’ (know yourself\, plan ahead\, and p
lay chess)\n- Ethics in modern science\n- Alternative careers\n\nReference

al College Press (2006).\n\nSpeaker(s): \, Professor Federico Rosei\n\nRoo
