DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\n[]\n\nCloud computing forms the backbone of modern
ubiquitous computing services that we utilize\non a daily basis across ou
r many smart and connected devices. Today\, general-purpose chat-bots\, so
cial\nmedia\, online gaming\, recommendation engines\, and billions of Int
ernet-of-Things (IoT) devices rely\nheavily on cloud computing platforms.
These platforms consist of data centers that can have hundreds of\nthousan
ds of compute servers\, as well as extensive networking and storage suppor
t to meet the growing\nperformance needs of contemporary cloud application
 s. Over time\, these data centers have become one\nof the largest energy c
onsumers in the world\, consuming up to 2% of the global energy supply\, w
 ith\nexperts estimating a rise to 13% by 2030. In the past\, data center e
nergy consumption was simply\nconsidered a cost burden to be minimized to
increase profits for providers. However\, with the increasing\nconcern abo
ut climate change\, and the rising CO 2 emissions and water use associated
with energy\nproduction and data center operation\, data centers are now
seen as one of the biggest problems in\nachieving the goal of limiting glo
bal warming. In this talk\, I will present my vision of how we can hope to
\nachieve environmentally sustainable cloud computing. I will discuss the
evolution of cloud computing\,\npromising green computing approaches that
are emerging\, and the difficult open problems that must be\naddressed to
 meet climate goals in the future.\n\nSpeaker(s): Sudeep\, \n\nAgenda: \n6:
