DESCRIPTION:SPEAKER:\nProf. Kannan Moudgalya\, IIT Bombay (IN)\n\nABSTRACT:
\nFree and Open Source Software for Education (FOSSEE) (https://fossee.in)
is a project initiated by the Ministry of Education at IIT Bombay. It pro
motes many open source software systems\, such as Scilab\, Python\, R\, Op
enModelica\, OpenFOAM and DWSIM. It also promotes open source hardware pro
jects\, such as Arduino\, and OpenPLC.\n\nBy combining KiCAD and Ngspice\,
FOSSEE has developed an open source circuit simulation software eSim (htt
ps://esim.fossee.in). By incorporating GHDL\, eSim has been made capable o
f carrying out mixed signal simulation. This capability has been extended
to simulate circuits with microcontrollers\, with every instruction being
implemented through a function written in C. The FOSSEE team has also crea
ted a cloud version of eSim (https://simulation.iitbx.in/). FOSSEE carries
out several activities to promote circuit simulation through eSim. It has
trained about 37\,500 students (12\,500 women and 25\,000 men) and 5\,000
faculty members (2\,000 women and 3\,000 men) on the use of eSim. FOSSEE
helps colleges migrate their labs from proprietary software to eSim. About
500 electronic circuits have been coded in eSim by students across India\
, and these are released as open educational resources. These include circ
uits automatically converted from PSpice and LTSpice schematics to KiCAD\,
and hence\, eSim. The talk will begin with an introduction to Spoken Tuto
rials (https://spoken-tutorial.org)\, the methodology developed by the spe
aker for large scale training on IT topics. The talk will also give an ove
rview of FOSSEE's activities.\n\nSPEAKER BIO:\nProf. Kannan Moudgalya is a
n Emeritus Fellow at IIT Bombay in the department of chemical engineering\
, where\, he was previously a Chair Professor. He received a B.Tech degree
in Chemical Engineering at IIT Madras. He received Ph.D and Master of Ele
ctrical Engineering degrees from Rice University. His areas of research in
terest are modelling\, simulation\, optimisation\, and educational outreac
h. He has written two textbooks: Digital Control\, published by John Wiley
&Sons\, and Optimization\, Theory and Practice\, by Narosa.\n\nKannan has
been focusing on massive IT skills education using open source software th
rough Spoken Tutorial and FOSSEE projects. More than 8 million students ha
ve been trained using these projects. The FOSSEE project trains students t
o such a high level that they can become contributors themselves. He is ex
tending the Spoken Tutorial approach to other skills topics\, such as heal
th\, nutrition\, and breastfeeding.\n\nKannan received the Google MOOCs Re
search Award for the offline capability in Spoken Tutorials. He was nomina
ted for the Hindustan Times for Mumbai 2015 award. The Spoken Tutorial pro
ject received the best prize in the Reimagine Education Award 2015 institu
ted by QS-Wharton\, in the Nurturing Employment category. He received the
Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Recognition for Reengineering India 2020.\n\nRoom
