DESCRIPTION:Electric power grid around the world is being modernized to int
egrate renewable energy sources\, such as wind and solar in an unprecedent
ed scale. This brings unforeseen challenges in integration of inertia-less
and intermittent renewable energy sources with a legacy grid that was bui
lt with rotating machinery. An opportunity lies ahead to upgrade the power
flow controllers from the traditional reactance regulator and phase angle
regulator to a modern-day impedance regulator that is capable of regulati
ng the line voltage and controlling the active and reactive power flows in
the line independently.\n\nThe presentation is designed to provide the ba
sic principles of power flow control theory\, an overview of the most comm
only used power flow controllers\, and future trends. The audience will he
ar from an expert who actually designed and commissioned a number of power
electronics-based FACTS controllers since their inceptions in the 1990s.\
