DESCRIPTION:A UTILITY PERSPECTIVE ON SMART METERING SYSTEMS\n\nSmart meteri
 ng has become a commonly used term to describe the traditional residential
  based electronic energy consumption meter with communication capability. 
 Smart metering systems have been in place for a number of years but the sa
 fety\, security\, operation and capabilities of these systems is not well 
 understood outside of the utility.\n\nThere is much more to smart metering
  today than just the billing meter located on a house or place of business
 . Smart grid initiatives with advanced technology allow for greater meteri
 ng capability outside of the billing meter. Metering data is now being col
 lected and utilized to enable advanced utility and customer applications. 
 This presentation will review smart meter technology systems in use today 
 including devices\, communication and applications as well as future smart
  metering opportunities.\n\nRegistration:\n\nDue to space constraints at t
 he Duke Envision center\, this meeting is limited to 30 attendees. Priorit
 y will be given to IEEE members\; non-IEEE memebers will be able to regist
