DESCRIPTION:For our second 1TJPC for 2017! Sam Hames from the University of
Queensland has kindly agreed to be the reader leader. The paper he has se
lected for us this month is\n\nG. Salton\, A. Wong\, and C. S. Yang. 1975.
A vector space model for automatic indexing. Commun. ACM 18\, 11 (Novembe
r 1975)\, 613-620. DOI=http://dx.doi.org/10.1145/361219.361220\n\nThe pape
r may be found at\n\nhttp://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=361220\n\nHere's so
me info on our speaker\n\nhttps://dermatology-research.centre.uq.edu.au/pr
ofile/153/samuel-hames\n\nIn Sam's own words "This is a seminal paper in i
nformation retrieval. Lots of ideas from here pop up all over the place."
Personally however I'm more interested in the old school typewrtier font a
nd the hand drawn figures while feeling somewhat belittled by the huge num
be rof citations.\n\nWe will be returnibg to SACCHAROMYCES BEER CAFÉ (see
address details & map below).\n\nAbout the 1st Tuesday Journal-Paper Club
: We meet usually on the 1st Tuesday of the month as the name suggests (in
spired by the ABC TV series "1st Tuesday Book Club"). Each month\, from am
ongst ourselves we identify a Reader Leader. He or she picks a highly cite
d\, 'top ten' or major-prize-winning article\, preferably in an SPS or Com
Soc journal. Through the month\, each of us reads the article. At the next
meeting\, the Reader Leader leads a discussion of that article\, starting
with his/her own appraisal. In so doing\, we all broaden our understandin
g of the field and further develop a sense of community.\n\n1st Rule of 1s
t Tuesday Journal-Paper Club: tell everyone about 1st Tuesday Journal-Pape
r Club.\n\nCo-sponsored by: Vaughan Clarkson\n\nSpeaker(s): \, \, \, \n\nB
