DESCRIPTION:Dr. Pete Wurman\, the great inspiring technical co-founder of K
iva Systems\, has an affinity with NCSU - he was also an associate Profess
or of Computer Science at NCSU. Dr. Wurman has agreed to remotely do a bri
ef informal casual chat session with our IEEE R&A members during the March
06\, 2017.\n\nAt the start of the session\, Mahesh will provide the high
level technical architecture\, positive aspects and inspirations of Kiva s
ystems warehouse design. This design - a simple and efficient distributed
design with "out of box" design thought process involved - turned the page
s of technological warehouse automation.\n\nAround 7:30pm\, we will do a v
ideo chat from NCSU with Dr. Wurman - a technical co-founder of Kiva syste
ms\, who will inspire our with his gracious presence and motivate us with
additional technical details and real experience around building Kiva syst
ems. Dr. Wurman has agreed to be present atleast for 15 minutes\, followed
 by a brief Q&A session.\n\nAfter the video chat\, Mahesh will highlight a
brief report on few other interesting industrial automation technologies
and a few possible future presentations.\n\nWe will finish it up with memb
ers "show and tell" if any.\n\nSpeaker information:\n\nPete Wurman is best
known for his work as a technical co-founder of Kiva Systems\, the Boston
-based company that pioneered the use of mobile robotics in warehouses and
distribution facilities. Pete joined Kiva in 2004 with Raff D’Andrea to
help founder Mick Mountz bring his vision to life. As CTO\, Pete was resp
onsible for the system architecture and decision-making algorithms. In May
of 2012\, Kiva was acquired by Amazon.com\, and has subsequently deployed
more than 30\,000 robots to Amazon warehouses.\n\nPrior to joining Kiva\,
Pete was an Associate Professor of Computer Science at North Carolina Sta
te University in Raleigh\, NC. Pete’s teaching focus was e-commerce syst
ems\, and his research focused on electronic auctions (especially combinat
orial auctions)\, multi-agent systems\, and resource allocation. Unfortuna
tely\, he never got to savor the fruits of earning tenure\, as the Kiva op
portunity had become too attractive and he moved his family to Boston.\n\n
Pete earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Michigan
in 1999\, and his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from M.I.T. in 1987.\n\nh
