DESCRIPTION:CHEERS OCEANEERS! Nov 2024 - OceanWell - Submerged Desalination
\n\nUpdate: InterOcean Systems is sponsoring drinks\, one per attendee. Pl
ease see Greg Laugle for a drink ticket when you arrive. Limit of qty 40 t
otal.\n\nAlso\, TMA BlueTech is offering a limited number of tickets to Bl
ueTech Week at a 50% discount. Details will be emailed to registered atten
dees\, or please ask Greg Laugle (OES Chair) or Matt Classen (TMA BlueTech
Executive Director) for more info.\n\nThis month's presentation will be g
iven by Dr. Michael Porter of OceanWell. OceanWell is developing an enviro
nmentally responsible submerged reverse osmosis system to harvest fresh wa
ter from the deep sea. Unlike the heavy industrial desalination process ty
pically conducted on land\, OceanWell passively extracts freshwater from t
he deep ocean without harming marine life. Its LifeSafe circulation system
is gentle on fish and plankton\, and effectively eliminates the strong br
ine discharge and land use requirements that plague coastal operations. Oc
eanWell also uses 30-40% less energy than conventional RO by leveraging th
e hydrostatic pressure of the deep ocean to drive the RO process. At about
400 meters deep in the aphotic zone—yet elevated above the seabed to pr
event benthic disturbance—the dark\, high-pressure environment provides
a clearer\, colder supply of seawater requiring minimal pretreatment and n
o chemicals. As our technology matures\, OceanWell is seeking support for
our ongoing pilot program\, commercial systems engineering\, and future pr
oject development.\n\nWelcome to the Nov 2024 monthly meeting for the IEEE
Oceanic Engineering Society (OES)\, San Diego Chapter\, which is hosting
this meeting jointly along with TMA (The Maritime Alliance)\, and MTS (Mar
ine Technology Society). We are also happy to partner with San Diego's IEE
E WIE (Women In Engineering) Affinity Group. Oceaneers events are always i
nclusive and supportive.\n\nPlease join us for the main presentation from
OceanWell and also plenty of time for networking and friendly conversation
 about everything oceanic\, engineering\, science\, Blue Tech\, and more.
No need to be an IEEE or OES member\, or TMA\, or MTS. Everyone is invited
.\n\nThis month\, we will be at Quantum Brewing again\, a cool science-the
med brewery founded by a biochemist.\n\nNov 13th\, 2024\, Wednesday\n\n5:3
0pm-8:00pm\n\nQuantum Brewing\n\n5375 Kearny Villa Rd #116\n\nSan Diego\,
CA 92123\n\nNo ticket required\, but please order something for yourself f
rom the brewery.\n\nPlease grab a bite from a nearby restaurant\, which is
okay to bring into the brewery per the owner.\n\nThe food and drinks are
not being funded by the hosts. Please open your own tab.\n\nAgenda:\n\n5:3

ES and other hosting group announcements.\n\n6:20pm: Presentation by Dr. M
ichael Porter of OceanWell.\n\n6:40pm (approximately): “open mic” for
any other attendees to present anything they like (ocean-related\, of cour
se).\n\nExamples: employers presenting opportunities for employment\, job
seekers presenting a quick bio\, internship program opportunities\, promot
ing other events\, seeking funding\, “show and tell” of any cool techn
ology you are working on\, etc.\n\n7:00pm to close: enjoy some drinks and
chatting with fellow oceanic engineering enthusiasts.\n\nRSVPs are appreci
ated for planning purposes. In your response\, please indicate whether you
 are member of OES\, TMA\, MTS\, CN\, and/or WIE.\n\nSpeaker(s): Dr. Micha
