DESCRIPTION:Microgrids can allow facilities to maintain continuity of elect
ric power service for critical loads during long duration outages. Most mi
crogrids use a variety of power sources and energy storage to provide on-s
ite generation\, including conventional generators\, renewables\, and ener
gy storage.\n\nTraditional batteries typically complement diesel generatio
n operation but are rarely used to replace generators\, primarily because
of the high cost and limited energy duration of commercially available bat
tery technologies.\n\nFlow battery technology offers a potential alternati
ve to traditional chemistries to reduce dependence on conventional generat
ors while still ensuring system reliability. Vanadium redox flow batteries
offer unique differentiators to lead acid and lithium-ion battery technol
ogies such as increased safety\, longer rated duration\, and longer life.
However\, the nascency of this technology and limited understanding of rel
iability and operational performance\, coupled with high equipment cost\,
typically limit the opportunities for field deployment.\n\nThis talk cover
s the fundamentals of microgrids and discusses the results from laboratory
tests of a vanadium flow battery that evaluated the potential for such a
battery to replace existing diesel generators.\n\nSpeaker(s): Dr. Peter Cu
 rtis\, \n\nAgenda: \n12:00 - Introduction\n\n12:03 - Presentation\n\n12:50
