DESCRIPTION:This interactive session will provide a practical introduction
to the IEEE standards development process. Standards aren’t just about t
he best technology – they are also driven by the economic and political
factors. Knowing how standards are developed\, and how to influence them\,
is essential for impact\, particularly in the area of communications tech
nologies. For this reason\, the IEEE Standards Association and IEEE Educat
ional Activities developed a standards simulation game to train profession
s and students in the standards development process. The session will cove
r a case study of how a communications standards group evolved\, before al
lowing participants to take an active role in developing their own standar
ds for a trip to Mars. The session concludes with a some lessons learned t
o and practical tips on how to engage more in the standardization process.
