DESCRIPTION:Large amounts of renewable energy sources (e.g.\, solar photovo
ltaics and wind power) and new electric loads (e.g.\, plug-in electric veh
icles) are being added to the electric power grid in a push to mitigate th
e effects of climate change. Due to the intermittent and uncertain nature
of these resources\, more flexibility is needed to ensure safe operating c
onditions of the power grid. A growing body of research has shown that rea
l-time control of flexible electric loads can provide flexibility to the p
ower grid. The water supply system (including drinking water distribution
and wastewater treatment processes) can be treated as flexible\, controlla
ble assets. For instance\, the power consumption of water supply pumps in
drinking water distribution networks and biogas electricity generation can
be shifted in time given the storage capabilities of water and pressurize
d gas tanks\, respectively. In this talk\, I will present an optimization
framework to optimally schedule and control assets within the water supply
system to provide services to power networks. Throughout the talk\, I wil
l discuss the associated benefits and drawbacks of the integrated water-po
wer optimization framework\, with a particular focus on performance\, resi
lience\, and computational tractability.\n\nThis presentation will count f
