DESCRIPTION:Title: Strange Things Happen When Nanomaterials are Driven Far
From Equilibrium\n\nThe past two decades have witnessed an explosion of in
terest in functional nanomaterials\, whose rich physical properties reflec
t their reduced dimensionality\, the importance of spin- and charge-based
interactions\, and the existence of complex correlated phases. The applica
tion of these materials in various technologies – that span from clean e
nergy to quantum computing – is premised upon a deep understanding of th
eir physical properties. Specifically\, the behavior that they exhibit whe
 n driven out of equilibrium\, by strong electric and/or optical fields\, c
an be crucial to many of these applications.\n\nIn my presentation\, I sum
marize some of the experiments that we have performed in recent years to i
nvestigate the behavior exhibited by a variety of different nanomaterials
that are driven electrically far from equilibrium. In many situations\, th
is driving gives rise to fundamentally new behavior\, not associated with
the material in its near-equilibrium state. Just a few such examples inclu
de the emergence of robust one-dimensional transport in narrow semiconduct
or channels subject to strong phonon emission [1]\; negative-mass amplific
ation in the narrow conduction-band states of transition-metal trichalcoge
nide nanowires [2]\; Landau-Zener tunneling across the minibands of (graph
ene/h-BN) van der Waals heterostructures [3]\; and dynamic resistive-switc
hing phenomena associated with charge-density wave evolution in layered tr
ansition-metal dichalcogenides [4\,5]. I will provide an overview of some
of these phenomena in my presentation\, focusing on the use of time-resolv
ed\, transient\, electrical measurements to probe the nonequilibrium dynam
 ics with sub-nanosecond resolution.\n\nReferences\n\n- J. Lee\, J. E. Han\
