DESCRIPTION:Join us online or at UBC Vancouver on March 24th for a presenta
tion by Ralph Rayner\, an IEEE OES Distinguished Lecturer\, on Climate Cha
nge and the Ocean.\n\nThe ocean annually absorbs about 27% of the carbon d
ioxide produced by burning fossil fuels and takes up much of the excess he
at that is trapped in the atmosphere by increasing greenhouse gas concentr
ations. This moderation of the terrestrial impact of climate change comes
at growing cost to life in the ocean and to the crucial ecosystem services
it provides. At the same time\, the ocean offers important opportunities
for enhanced sequestration and storage of carbon from the atmosphere.\n\nT
his presentation will introduce the role of the ocean in climate. It will
then explore some of the technologies that might be employed to make bette
r use of the capacity of the ocean for sequestering and storing carbon fro
m the atmosphere as a contribution to the delivery of net zero and beyond.
