DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a technical seminar by Dr. Alycen Wiacek on
Medical Acoustics for Global Health\, Imaging\, and Clinical Translation a
t Wayne State University.\n\nAbstract:\n\nUltrasound and photoacoustic ima
ging are two related medical imaging modalities that transmit sound and li
ght\, respectively\, into the body and measure signals representing the ac
oustic response from tissue. Due to their potential to be both noninvasive
and portable\, these acoustic-based imaging modalities hold significant p
romise for diagnosis in resource limited settings. However\, engineering q
uantitative tools rather than requiring manual image interpretation is cri
tical to aid the transition of these methods into the clinic. In this talk
\, I will highlight the work being done in the Medical Acoustics for Globa
l Health\, Imaging\, and Clinical Translation (MAGIC) Lab at Oakland Unive
rsity\, developing quantitative tools to improve the quality and availabil
ity of ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging. Specifically\, I will highlig
ht three main innovations including: (1) leveraging physics-informed deep
learning to diagnose breast cancer\, (2) quantifying portable ultrasound t
o guide physical therapy treatment\, and (3) developing quantitative photo
acoustic-based biomarkers to characterize thrombosis.\n\nBio:\n\n[Image pr
eview]Alycen Wiacek is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Electr
ical & Computer Engineering and Bioengineering at Oakland University where
she directs the Medical Acoustics for Global health Imaging and Clinical
translation (MAGIC) lab. Her research focuses on leveraging signal process
ing and artificial intelligence to improve the quality and availability of
ultrasound and other medical imaging methods. Dr. Wiacek earned her BS fr
om Wayne State University\, MS from Oakland University\, and PhD from John
s Hopkins University all in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Her work
is funded by the National Science Foundation\, the National Institutes of
Health\, and the Michigan Space Grant Consortium. She has also received se
veral awards for her work including the American Institute of Ultrasound i
n Medicine (AIUM) New Investigator Award\, the Siebel Scholar Award\, and
the Achievement Rewards for College Scientists (ARCS) Scholar Award.\n\nCo
