DESCRIPTION:The second lecture of the MTA 200 memorial semester of the IEEE
  BME SBC was delivered by Adrienn Szekszárdi\, a representative of MOL. S
 haring her comprehensive knowledge\, she provided insight into the possibi
 lities of the secondary utilization of hydrocarbon wells.\n\nIn the first 
 part of the lecture\, the audience received a brief introduction to the re
 quirements and challenges of deep drilling. We became familiar with the pr
 imary objectives\, functions\, structural composition\, and operational pr
 inciples of well drilling.\n\nThe exploration and evaluation of oil and ga
 s fields are among MOL’s key activities. The determination of potential 
 target areas is based on the analysis of data obtained through various exa
 minations and measurements. This data may come from previously drilled wel
 ls\, the reprocessing of old seismic data\, or the acquisition of new seis
 mic data.\n\nTo understand and implement well integration\, it is necessar
 y to be familiar with some basic definitions. For example\, deep drilling 
 is a process (operation)\, whereas the well itself is the final product. D
 uring deep drilling\, the process is referred to as &quot;drilling&quot; until compl
 etion\, and once the facility is fully constructed and put into operation\
 , it is called a &quot;well.&quot; Well integrity is determined by the reliability o
 f well barriers\, which are designed to prevent the uncontrolled release o
 f fluids from oil and gas wells.\n\nThe &quot;Plug &amp; Abandonment&quot; (P&amp;A) procedu
 re pertains to the closure and securing of wells. The relevant regulations
  vary by jurisdiction\, making it challenging for operators with internati
 onal assets to comply with all requirements. Operators must adhere to thes
 e regulations to ensure safe and environmentally responsible operation. Th
 ese regulations typically cover various areas\, such as casing and cementi
 ng requirements\, pressure testing procedures\, as well as monitoring and 
 reporting obligations.\n\nLike most large-scale industrial activities\, we
 ll drilling does not come without risks. Activities that result in a net l
 oss are referred to as &quot;dry drilling&quot; Originally\, this term was used in h
 ydrocarbon and geothermal fluid exploration to describe wells where no sig
 nificant oil or water reserves were found. However\, modern technologies n
 ow offer new possibilities for the utilization of these wells\, such as us
 ing them for monitoring or as part of closed-loop geothermal systems.\n\n[
