DESCRIPTION:Optical Fibers for a Sustainable Future\n\nThe University of Pa
rma celebrates the International Day of Light (IDL) together with the Euro
pean partners of the EU GREEN alliance. The initiative\, established by UN
ESCO for 16 May\, aims to enhance the crucial role of light and light-base
d technologies in science\, culture and art\, education and sustainable de
velopment\, in fields as diverse as medicine\, communications and energy.
This year's theme\, Light Innovation Society\, highlights the central role
of technologies that exploit light in the progress of science\, innovatio
n and social well-being\, and their crucial contribution to achieving the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN 2030 Agenda.\n\nIn this fra
mework\, on Thursday 15 May 2025 the Campus Scienze e Tecnologie will host
“Optical Fibers for a Sustainable Future”\, a themed morning featurin
g two seminars in English aimed at students\, researchers and anyone inter
ested in discovering how communications based on optical fibers and sustai
nability are closely connected.\n\nThe two seminars\, which will be held f
rom 10:30 to 12:30 in person in Classroom B of the Plesso delle Aule delle
Scienze and online for all interested people\, will be held by Piero Cast
oldi of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna di Pisa and Sara Mazzarella of Op
en Fiber S.p.A. The initiative is held under the patronage of the IEEE Pho
tonics Society Italy Chapter and the RESTART Foundation.\n\nThe details of
the two seminars follow:\n\nTowards greener networks and processors: expl
oiting light as the energy saving enabler\n\nPiero Castoldi\, Full Profess
or in Telecommunications\, Director of the TeCIP Institute at Scuola Super
iore Sant’Anna\, Pisa\, Italy\nThe seminar presents the role of photonic
s and optical networks in reducing energy consumption\, with special focus
on the reduction of power consumption in different network segments and i
n artificial intelligence processing. It will further outline perspectives
for the telecommunication engineers.\nPiero Castoldi (IEEE Senior Member)
is Full Professor in Telecommunications and Director of the Telecommunica
tions\, Computer Engineering\, and Photonics Institute (TeCIP) at Scuola S
uperiore Sant’Anna (Pisa\, Italy)\, and Responsible for the "Networks an
d Services" area. He has been involved with various responsibilities in se
veral national and EU FP7\, H2020 and HE projects\, and he has managed sev
eral corporate-sponsored projects with the Italian Railway Infrastructure
Company\, Ericsson\, Telecom Italia and other companies. He is currently p
rincipal investigator of a large project on optical communication infrastr
uctures of the future within the PNRR RESTART program. His most recent res
earch interests lie in the areas of optical network architectures\, networ
k management and control\, interconnection networks for Data Centers\, 5G/
6G networking. He is author of more than 500 technical papers published in
international journals and international conference proceedings and he ha
s filed more than 20 patents.\n\nThe switching decade. The fiber promise f
or the resilience and the digital transformation\n\nSara Mazzarella\, Exec
utive MBA at the Politecnico di Milano\, Senior Advisor for technical regu
lation and radio spectrum\, Open Fiber S.p.A.\nThe seminar is focused on t
he role of optical fiber for the digital transformation of the economy\, t
hrough the switch-off of the outdated technologies and the adoption of inn
ovative solutions based on the principles of resilience\, ethics and susta
inability of infrastructures. It will offer insights on the role of fiber
as an enabler for vertical services\, focusing on some empirical applicati
ons (fiber sensing\, smart cities\, telemedicine). Concluding reflections
on the future challenges for the industry and the role of the telecommunic
ations engineers to drive the digital revolution will be provided.\nSara M
azzarella is Executive MBA at the Politecnico di Milano and Senior Advisor
with specific commitment in technical regulation and radio spectrum in Op
en Fiber\, the company responsible for deploying a nationwide ultra-broadb
and network in Italy. As ambassador for Open Fiber\, in the RESTART progra
m she is project manager for the issues related to the market analysis\, t
he regulatory challenges and the deployment of future proof architectures
and services. At the same time\, she holds a role of Adjunct Professor in
LUISS University and LUISS Business School of Rome.\n\nTo participate onli
